Finding Yourself Again When Life Feels Overwhelming

Being a mum is one of the most rewarding experiences, but it can also feel like a constant juggling act. Between the expectations of everyday life, caring for your children, managing the household, and trying to keep everything running smoothly, it’s easy to lose sight of yourself. You might find that simple things like eating properly, taking a moment to bathe, or even dreaming about your own goals get pushed aside. If this sounds familiar, it’s time to slow down and get back to basics. Let me share what helped me reset after having my four children and how you can start small, one day and one step at a time.

The Overwhelm of Everyday Life

When I became a mum, I was full of energy and hope. But as the days turned into months and years, I found myself overwhelmed and overworked. I was so busy taking care of everyone else that I forgot to take care of myself. My dreams, my finances, even the simple act of eating well or taking a shower became afterthoughts. I felt lost and unrecognisable to myself.

This is a common experience for many women who give so much to their families and work. The pressure to be perfect, to do it all, can be exhausting. But the truth is, you don’t have to do everything at once. You can choose to reset and start fresh, focusing on what uplifts you the most.

Starting Small and Simple

The key to regaining yourself is to start small. Don’t try to overhaul your entire life in one day. Instead, pick one thing that will make you feel good and manageable. For me, it was my hair. I began taking 20 minutes each morning just to care for my hair. This small act of self-care became a moment of peace and confidence.

Once that became part of my routine, I moved on to skincare. My face looked tired and drained, not because of age but because I wasn’t looking after it. I chose a simple skincare routine that took just 15 minutes every two days. Over six months, I added more small habits that made me feel alive and like myself again.

Building Confidence Bit by Bit

As I added these small self-care moments, I noticed my confidence growing. I felt more like a woman, not just a mum or a worker. It was important to set boundaries too. I made sure everyone in my household knew when it was “mama time” — a time when I focused on myself without interruptions.

This gentle, step-by-step approach helped me reclaim my identity. It wasn’t about perfection but about progress. You can do the same, no matter where you are right now.

Simple Products That Helped Me Reset

Sometimes, having the right products can make self-care easier and more enjoyable. For my hair care, I found the Shea Moisture Coconut & Hibiscus Curl Enhancing Smoothie really helpful. It’s a natural product that nourishes hair and makes styling simple. You can check it out here.

For skincare, I started using the CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser. It’s gentle, effective, and perfect for tired skin that needs a little boost. It helped my face feel fresh without overwhelming my routine. You can find it here.

Adding these simple, reliable products made my small routines feel like treats rather than chores. They helped me stay consistent and enjoy the process.

Setting Boundaries and Saying No

One of the hardest but most important parts of this journey was learning to say no. Saying no to extra tasks, to people’s demands, and sometimes even to my own unrealistic expectations. Setting clear boundaries meant I could protect my “mama time” and make sure I had space to recharge.

You don’t have to explain yourself or feel guilty. Your wellbeing matters. When you take care of yourself, you’re better able to care for others.

Taking It One Day at a Time

If you’re feeling low, lost, or unrecognisable, remember that change doesn’t have to happen overnight. Take it one day at a time. Choose one small thing that will uplift you and start there. Maybe it’s a few minutes with a good book, a walk outside, or a quiet cup of tea.

The important thing is to be kind to yourself and recognise that you deserve this time. You are not alone in feeling overwhelmed, and it’s okay to pause and reset.

Your Next Step

Today, wherever you are, if you feel like everything is too much, it’s time to take some time for you. Start small. Pick one thing that will make you feel good and build from there. Remember, this is your journey back to yourself. You deserve to feel alive, confident, and whole.
